Ericeira rewards surfers who can adapt. The region combines exposed beaches with reefs and points, so a famous name on the map is not a promise of a suitable session. Ribeira d’Ilhas is a recognised break; Coxos demands experience and respect. For a first lesson, ask a local school to choose the beach for that day rather than committing to a particular reef.

When to go

Autumn is a useful planning window for experienced surfers chasing Atlantic swell. Summer can offer a gentler introduction, although exposed beaches still get powerful. In winter, build in days when watching from the cliffs is the right decision. Wind, tide and swell direction matter more than the month alone.

Choose your base

Stay in the village if walking to dinner matters; choose accommodation nearer your chosen beach if you want fewer daily transfers. They are different trips. Ask whether surf guiding, equipment and beach transport are actually included before comparing camp prices.

Build a better surf week

Make the first day an orientation day: check the sea, talk to a school and find your nearest beach access. Keep the middle of the trip flexible for changing wind. Save a land day for the village rather than trying to fit every named break into a checklist.

Before you book

Compare the whole trip: flights and board baggage, the final transfer, accommodation, equipment and lessons. Get a written breakdown of what a package includes. Check cancellation terms and ask how the operator handles days when conditions are unsuitable.
