Find your kind of wave
Bundoran’s reputation includes serious reef waves. New surfers should book a local school that uses suitable nearby beach conditions, rather than heading to a reef because it is close to town. Experienced visitors still benefit from advice on access and the right tide.
When to go
Autumn is a classic Atlantic surf-trip window, with changing weather and shorter days as the season progresses. Summer is worth considering for a first coached trip. In winter, powerful swell and cold conditions make flexibility essential; do not book a rigid itinerary around a single break.
Choose your base
Compare arrival airports with the full onward journey. A town base keeps meals and surf shops convenient, while beach sessions may still require transport. Ask your school what it supplies: a well-fitting wetsuit and appropriate cold-water accessories matter more than travelling light.
Build a better surf week
Give wet gear somewhere to dry and plan something enjoyable for stormy days. Keep access paths clear, follow local advice and support the businesses that operate beyond the holiday season. Your best trip may include one excellent session and a very good afternoon ashore.
Before you book
Compare the whole trip: flights and board baggage, the final transfer, accommodation, equipment and lessons. Get a written breakdown of what a package includes. Check cancellation terms and ask how the operator handles days when conditions are unsuitable.
